GREECE

My country

Greece is located in southeastern Europe, at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, with hundreds of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas and a population of approximately 11 million people. Influential in ancient times, Greece is considered the cradle of western civilization, being the birthplace of democracy, western philosophy, western literature, historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, western drama and of course the Olympic Games. Greece's rich historical legacy, which is reflected by the country's 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the endless kilometers of the Greek coast, the mild climate, the high percentage of sunshine and of course the great food, make Greece one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world!

My city

Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, is one of the oldest cities in the world with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years. The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon, considered a key landmark of early western civilization.

The city also retains Roman and Byzantine monuments, as well as a smaller number of Ottoman monuments. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. The Temple of Poseidon (5thc. B.C.) on Cape Sounion is a great example of ancient Greek architecture. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece...

My school

DES school, Kindergarten and Primary School, is a private bilingual school, a candidate IB PYP World School, with over 300 students from 4 to 12 years old. Our school is located at the top of a hill in Varkiza, a suburb 25 km from the centre of Athens.

Our school proposes a differentiated educational approach based on the theory of "Multiple Intelligences". Part of our basic programme, starting from the first grade, is creative learning through literature, arts, story-telling, music, coding, STEM and more.

Pupils at DES set out on an exciting journey of the mind, body, heart and spirit through an innovative, collaborative and engaging approach to learning. Within a caring environment, pupils and staff form a co-operative partnership based upon our school values of respect, compassion, responsibility and integrity.

At DES, we believe that each child is unique in the way that they learn and the pace

with which they process knowledge and we prepare them to become independent thinkers with critical and creative thought.
